В пылу литературного рвения я обнаружил, что нечаянно позволил себе принять форму большой сороконожки.
OMG!!! This is your best one YET.... I love it. (I should probably refrain from allusions to HP as not to trivialize the poem, hm...)

No, no, you're quite welcome to comment. This way I'll know what I actually meant by this :)

Well then... it's a great piece of self-talk; where one is approaching a terrifying revelation/event: terrifying in that it's something that's been repeating itself over and over again and thus became intimately familiar, and in that that the person is supposed to suppress his emotions, take it all in his stride and not be troubled by it. There's a great sense of fatalism and doom -- and the line between right and wrong, good and evil begins to blur. In a way, it's very "dark" - as there's no right and wrong anymore; but then, it's also very human, where in times of great danger/need/evil, all you can do sometimes is choose the lesser of the two evils, and muddle along the best you can, and admit it to yourself.

HP-wise, I was reminded of the following conversation betwen Snape and Dumbledore:

"So the boy... the boy must die? I thought... all these years... that we were protecting him for her. For Lily. [ ] You have kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?"

"Don't be so shocked, Severus. How many men and women have you watched die?"

"Lately, only those whom I could not save. You have used me."

Ah, the angst, the angst.

How many men and women have you watched die?
Spot-on, as usual. :friend: Actually it wrote itself after I listened to some news on the radio. It's not like actually watching, thank God, but still what happened at that power plant is a bit too close to home - I worked at one of those, so I can imagine all too well just how horrible it is. And the feeling of absolute helplessness, like all you can do is watch. And it applies to the whole modus vivendi around here.
